IMPACT Award

Swim for Charlie has also been in the news!

GlaxoSmithKline publicized the winners of its IMPACT Award by producing a short video showcasing each organization’s work. We are proud to see Swim for Charlie’s impact in the community highlighted through this video.
We are honored to be featured in Durham Magazine (pages 70–73), highlighting students from Fayetteville Street Elementary School.

Last month, Swim for Charlie hosted the 3rd Annual SFC FUNdraising Meet, which grew by 25% over last year and raised more than $7,500. The meet brought together masters swimmers from across North Carolina and the East Coast, creating an exciting andsupportive environment whileamplifying our message about the importance of water safety for youth.

In other swimming news, Swim for Charlie Secretary and Board Member Janice Campagna won multiple events at Masters Nationals. Congratulations, Janice!

Looking ahead

Swim for Charlie is excited to welcome Croasdaile Country Club and Parkwood Swim Club as host sites for the program this September. The addition of these pools will allow us to partner with more DPS schools and serve up to 190 additional students next year.

Croasdaile and Parkwood will become the fifth and sixth outdoor pools participating in the
program, joining Hollow Rock Racquet & Swim Club, Hope Valley Country Club, Duke Faculty Club, and the Jewish Community Center. With six pools operating simultaneously during the eight weekdays following Labor Day, Swim for Charlie will once again rely on the generosity of community members and club participants to serve as volunteer instructors. We encourage you to reserve those days on your calendar and consider joining us in teaching Durham Public Schools second-grade students essential water safety skills. To register to become a Swim for Charlie instructor see our volunteer webpage.

If you are interested in becoming an instructor, we will be offering Instructor Training sessions throughout the summer, along with an additional in-pool in-service. Our most recent in-service, led by Assistant Program Manager Paige Welch, was a great success, and we look forward to expanding this training opportunity throughout the year.

You can also support Swim for Charlie’s expansion efforts with a donation at our donor webpage.

As warmer weather draws us to beaches, lakes, and pools for recreation and exercise, we ask you to reflect on what it would mean to you and your family if swimming were not an option—if fear kept you from entering the water. Removing that fear and empowering the youth in our community with lifesaving water safety skills is at the heart of our mission.
