POOL COORDINATOR

The Dr. Charles van der Horst Water Safety Initiative, d/b/a Swim for Charlie (SFC), is seeking a mission-driven professional to coordinate the running of the program at the pool.

Swim for Charlie’s youth-focused water safety program aims to provide every second-grade North Carolina child with the opportunity to be safe in and around the water.

The Substitute Pool Coordinator reports to the Program Manager. The Pool Coordinator supports the setup and supervision of swim sessions, ensures safety protocols are followed, communicates with instructors, staff, and pool partners, and addresses student participant needs as they arise.

This is a daily, short-shift position. It runs Monday – Friday for about 3 hours in the morning to ~1pm. It is a paid position with an hourly rate commensurate with certifications and experience.

Job Responsibilities

  • Be present at one of Swim for Charlie’s host pools on the days of the program.
  • Confirm that all scheduled volunteer instructors, lifeguards, and school chaperones are present.
  • Readjust student instructor pairings if a scheduled instructor does not show up, or calls out the morning of lessons to say he/she is sick or unavailable.
  • Review the American Red Cross “Whale Tales” rule of the day with the students.
  • Teach one of the student groups or serve as a lifeguard at the pool, if needed.
  • Log student attendance with the schoolteacher’s assistance.
  • Hand out the laminated Skills Check Off sheets to the instructors and collect them back.
  • Act as the timekeeper and alert instructors when 5 minutes remain in the lesson, and again when the lesson is over.
  • Collaborate with Pool Lifeguards and Pool staff to manage any pool incidents, filling out the SFC incident report if necessary.
  • Contact the Program Manager for any incident that occurs during the program.
  • Refer questions from the pool staff or the school staff to the Program Manager.
  • Ensure SFC behavioral guidelines are followed by both Volunteer instructors and participating students.
  • Ensure accuracy of student skill level reports.
